Assembled in Philadelphia and placed in service in 1880 for the Denver & Rio Grand Railroad. Pride of the crew is evident by the high polish on the brass boiler jacket and the antlers on the lamp. Narrow-gauge tracks were required to climb the steep grades and winding canyons of the Rockies. By 1888 the D & RG had 1670 miles of track to support the developing mining, lumber, and farming industries. |
