Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge, Schuylkill River, Leslie's Illustrated News, Engraving, 1876.
This bridge combines stone arch construction that dates back to 4000 BC, and is still seen in Roman aqueducts, with a central span of iron forged in modern foundries. The buildings of the Centennial of 1876 loom in the background.
